Shutting out jet and highway noise
Sound gets into a room through the glass itself and through any air gap around the window. The low rumble of jet engines and heavy trucks is harder to block than higher sounds, and thin or single-pane glass passes a lot of it. Where the weatherstripping has flattened or a sash no longer closes tight, car horns and leaf blowers come in through the gaps as well.
